The world’s most populous island, Java is home to over half of Indonesia’s entire population. It once lay at the heart of powerful Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms, Islamic sultanates and the Dutch East Indies and today lays claim to the country’s thriving capital and four of Indonesia’s eight World Heritage Sites. Sandwiched between Sumatra to the west and Bali to the east, Java’s volcanic landscapes have been a melting pot of cultures and religions for generations, resulting in an island whose artistic and human traditions resonate across some of the most fertile landscapes anywhere on earth. A mix of dense tropical rainforest, coastal mangroves and rich Javan rice terraces, the island is considered a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 450 species being recorded, along with some 500 species of butterfly, around 100 different types of snakes and the critically endangered one-horned rhino.
